Pen and Wash Sketching

Course Description

Course suits: Those who already have some experience of sketching or watercolour and wish to explore pen wash sketching 

Objectives: The day will be spent looking at different approaches to pen and wash work in supporting sketchbook exercises.

We will start the session with some practical exercises in the studio looking at the ways that materials behave and relate. We will also review other artists styles and techniques. 

Using pens (both soluble and permanent), soluble pencils and pastels aligned with watercolour, and even just water washes, we will carry out studies of local scenes around the studio, weather permitting. If the weather is unsuitable we will work from a large array of photographs.

Work will follow line over wash and wash over line, the use of limited palette and full colour washes. 

​

Please bring a quality sketchbook (one that will take application of watercolour) a variety of soluble and permanent pens, pan watercolours (if you have them)  and suitable clothing for painting outside. Also ensure that you have some watercolour paper available so that this can support work in the studio.
